If he was brought to Humboldt County it would have been up to Hoopa.  They 
have lots of the records still up there from the boarding school. 
Garberville was just a wide spot in the road back then.  In fact, 
Garberville is still just a wide spot in the road <g>

The roads going north and south didn't really exist.  The only way in and 
out of the county back then was by steamer unless you came over the 
mountains from the valley via Redding.

There also lots of records in the Humboldt Room in the main branch of the 
Humboldt County Library in Eureka.

The local historical society has some real good sources also.

Oh, and HSU has lots of records there too.
