Tom,
I'd put the registers at the perimeter of the house, especially if heating
upstairs is not of paramount importance. If located too close to the stove
you may have more heat going upstairs than you'd like. The perimeter
location will require the heat to circulate more evenly, and will apply heat
where the upstairs is coolest.
