Hi James...sorry I didn't pick up on your name sooner then this.
Will have to say that your an articulate rascal...some folks have said...or accused me of being... an old wind bag before now when I carried on and on about something...;-) cos your not old nuff to be an old wind bag yet...:-)
I feel no need to debate about gadgets...:-) My wife was born on a dairy farm in southern Missouri...and they didn't have electric power...then they got it...back in the fifties......ask them if the like gadgets or not..if they are labor saving ones...I love um...:-) Sure as hell saved them alot of labor...just in milking their cows twice a day...which they did by hand. Had to haul their milk two miles in cans to put it in a spring to keep cool...refrigerated bulk tank helped alot there. And I could go on and on...but you should have the picture by now...:-)
Ayup...the homesteader question was/is a loaded question...and no easy or right answer. I have no desire to try and completely live off my land here even if I could. I do the garden thing...small and large fruit...and my own firewood. Also my son and I have a nice shop where we do most all our own repairs on our equipment of all kinds. He is a trained mechinist and mechanic.
You have to be careful when your chopping cabbage and yakking at the same time...could end up wid a finger part in the slaw...;-) Franklin
