  Hi Roxann...the MagicHeat device is a metal rectangular shaped box. It has ten or a dozen tubes that run through it with a thermostactically controlled fan mounted behind the tubes...it blows the hot air into the room that is removed from the flue gas which flows inside the box and around the outside of the tubed. this device is mounted in the flue pipe. It really removes alot of heat. I also use FlueCleaner per directions that I bought when I got the MagicHeat. So far no sign of soot buildup...will know more in the spring...;-) I also clean my chimney a couple times during the heating season...Franklin
