Even at that price that is about .7 acre per house.  Just over 6000 sq. ft. 
per lot and that is not counting paved streets or any space given over to 
playgrounds, schools, or retail.

It is not entirely the greedy RE agents, there are the people who think 
that it is a good investment to buy desert houses at a time of increasing 
energy costs, declining water availability, and rising temperatures.
