Actually, my father patented a process for doing this that is widely used,  
involving pumping a solution into the shale that disolves it, pumping it out,  
removing the oil and pumping the remainder back to maintain the stability of 
the  ground. A very effecient, low energy method was what they needed, and 
where  there is a will, there is a way.
