Haven't been following this thread but when I saw the great list of 
installments on it, I had to see what is going on.  The tree in Don's picture is 
definately NOT a yellow poplar.  As has already been pointed out, they don't bloom 
until they are quite large.  Also the stem of this tree is green.  Yellow 
poplars are dark, dark brown in the new growth and black after the wood is a year 
old.  It's difficult to describe in detail, but there are millions of tulip 
trees here abouts and that bloom just doesn't look like them.
