Thanks, Richard - you're heading in the right direction
but on the wrong track. What I'm seeing on the sites
so far offered is sheet metal type 'strengtheners' 
that fit *against* the *sides* of 2x?s.

What I'm trying to convey is a connector into which
the *ends* of the 2x?s fit. Some are right angles,
some are ?45 degree angles? for peaked roofs - there
is an almost-octopus one for the *center* of a dome-
type roof. 

By having the metal form the angle, one does not 
need to miter the *ends* of the 2x?s.

I don't think they are sold in anything but *kits*. 
It could be that the ones into which the *ends*
of sawhorse legs fit into are made by the same mfr.
