An employee of Chris's company in Texas is almost certainly the victim of
mad cow disease. I was not going to write about it because I don't care to
be an alarmist. This article opens the door. The employee became ill and
deteriorated so rapidly that it was scary for those who know her. Medical
tests have failed to diagnose the cause. Friends who have visited her say
her mind is going and she is wasting away. She is now dead or will die
soon. Her brother is a Texas cattle rancher.

Possible new case of mad cow disease found in U.S.

WASHINGTON - A second case of mad cow disease may have turned up in the
United States but the suspected animal had not entered the food chain,
Agriculture Department officials said Thursday.

The officials released few details and refused to say where the possibly
diseased animal was found. They said it would be four to seven days before
more could be confirmed, a delay that livestock industry representatives
said would cause turmoil in the beef market.

Mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, attacks an animal's
nervous system. People who eat food contaminated with BSE can contract a
rare disease that is nearly always fatal, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
