Couple says new fire log formula hot, clean - Compressed wood lacks petroleum and
chemical binders - Cleaned up: Modern wood stoves remarkably clean
December 19, 2004

With the approach of winter, many people are stacking firewood or stocking up on
those convenient, easy-light fire logs in preparation for warm evenings by the
fire.

But Summit Views LLC, based in Watsonville, Calif., thinks it has a better idea.
The company has developed fire logs out of compressed wood chips, which it says
burn hotter and cleaner than firewood without the use of the petroleum or
chemical binders used in other commercial fire logs.

Summit Views' product, the Goodwood fire log, is better for the environment than
either firewood or many other fire logs, according to co-founder Jennifer Young.

Cleaned up: Modern wood stoves remarkably clean

By NICK GEVOCK Chronicle Staff Writer

With energy prices soaring in recent years, some people are turning to wood
stoves to take the sting out of their heating bills. Thanks to new technology,

throughout the night and are less likely to create chimney fires than their
earlier counterparts.

"You get more BTUs out of the wood," said Ralph James, a salesman at Bare's Stove
and Spa in Bozeman. "Stoves today will burn anywhere from one-third to a half
less wood and still heat the same area."

But just as dramatic, modern wood stoves burn far cleaner, putting a fraction of
the particles in the air as the stoves of even 15 years ago.
