isql prompts for the password before opening the connection.
I think the idea is to get the user-interface elements which potentially could wait a long time done before opening the connection. If you prompt between the connect and sending the login packet, the server could time out the connection if the user doesn't type the password fast enough.

Thanks for the suggestion. I added your text to my local working copy of
the tsql man page.
Your observation, however, is more to the point: the password should be
requested only after the connection is formed, to send the login packet.
It would be a nice refinement, and dovetails with my effort to separate
clearly the connection from the login.
