[freetds] tsql works but php does not?

I don't know PHP, but I have two quick suggestions:

1.  Enable error/message handling.  Where does PHP route db-lib's
handlers?  

2.  If all else fails, turn on TDSDUMP.  It will capture any messages
(and data, of course) returned by the server.  

Sometimes the PHP account turns out not to have access to freetds.conf.
