I believe things are a bit different. Look at this:

osprey: 11:44:24 ~> ls /usr/X11R6/lib/lib*.so
ls: No match.
osprey: 11:44:37 ~> ldd /usr/local/bin/ntpd
/usr/lib/libcurses.a(shr42.o)
/opt/freeware/lib/libreadline.a(libreadline.so.4)
/usr/local/bin/ntpd
/usr/lib/libcrypt.a(shr.o)
/usr/lib/libc.a(shr.o)


When the name of a library file ends on .a this apparently doesn't say
that this is a static lib. Although there are shared libs ending on .so
as well ....
To ease things wouldn't it make sense to link libtds_objects and
libreplacements directly into libtds - be the latter shared or not ?
