The above URL is a symbolic link on the ftp server to the latest release
candidate, currently 0.62rc1.

The tarball will unpack itself as "freetds-0.62.dev.20031227" but don't
let that bother you. If the feedback is positive, in a few days I'll
branch the code in CVS (not branching now saves the effort of maintaining
two branches, and means whatever fixes go into 0.62 automatically become
part of 0.63). After I branch the code, I'll fix the internal numbering.
I plan that for January 4, if all goes well. If anyone has functional
changes they want to commit, please tell me and I'll do it sooner.

In preparing the release, I came across some mail of 11 months ago, from
me, when we released 0.61:

> I'm looking forward to 0.62, too.  Bill promises a revamped ct-lib;
> Steve wants to zap locale.conf; Frediano continues to pound away on
> ODBC. I'm going to move the website into CVS, add doxygen output to the
> nightly build process, and plow the compile farm. Unless I miss my
> guess, FreeTDS 0.62 will work with Star Office and run on VMS, albeit
> not at the same time.

Well, I'm obviously no Nostradamus, but the important things came to pass.

The only reason this is rc1 and not a full release is that it needs as
much testing as we can muster. There were important iconv, ct-lib, and
ODBC changes in the last year. Several bcp and 64-bit issues were found
and fixed only recently. Please try it out, so your favorite platform
definitely works when the final version rolls out.

Enjoy.
