Ok, your note was so thorough I missed this one. Did you specify a tds
version to use when you built freetds?
You configure line should contained either --with-tdsver=4.2 or
--with-tdsver=7.0 depending on whether you need large char types. (TDS 4.2
is a bit more mature, but doesn't support all of the newer features).
