You guys, I'm in San Jose, working 12-hour days & eating nothing but
amazingly delicious ramen, and I've been feeling pretty delirious for
the past 3 or 4 hours now, so I'm afraid that this whole email might
just be random words strung together. Hopefully the
dates/lineups/locations are correct, anyway:

Thursday, November 18
Azure Ray (http://www.thewarmsupercomputer.com/AZURERAY.html)
James Husband (http://www.myspace.com/jameshusband)
ArtsCenter, Carrboro

Thursday, November 18
Michelle Shocked (http://www.michelleshocked.com/)
The Casbah, Durham

Like a lot of people, I suppose, I really liked Michelle Shocked back in
the late 80s. Also like a lot of people, I suspect, I completely forgot
all about her after her first couple of records.

Near as I can tell, this is her first NC show since 2003. Just, you
know, FYI.

Thursday, November 18
Aqueduct (http://www.aqueductisgoodmusic.com)
Brendan Benson (http://brendanbenson.com/)
The Posies (http://theposies.net/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Thursday, November 18
Hackensaw Boys (http://www.hackensawboys.com)
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

Thursday, November 18
The Spinns (http://www.thespinns.freeservers.com/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

The Spinns split up a few years ago, but it's entirely possible that
they might have forgotten all about that.

Thursday, November 18
Jordan & the Sphinx (http://www.myspace.com/servant4good)
Jeremy Blair from Effingham
Motorco Music Hall, Durham

Thursday, November 18
Embarrassing Fruits (http://www.myspace.com/embarrassingfruitsband)
Americans in France (http://www.myspace.com/americansinfrance)
Kid Future
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Local Bands, Local Beers

Thursday, November 18
Calico Haunts (http://www.myspace.com/calicohaunts)
Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas
(http://www.myspace.com/jhernandezmusick)
Aaron Berg and the Heavy Love (http://www.myspace.com/theheavylove)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Thursday, November 18
Shawn Luby
Dark Water Rising (http://www.reverbnation.com/darkwaterrising)
Samantha Crain
The Pinhook, Durham

Thursday, November 18
Here Lies
Liturgy
9 Fingered Thug
Kings, Raleigh

Friday, November 19
Future Islands (http://www.myspace.com/futureislands)
Lonnie Walker (http://www.myspace.com/lonniewalker)
Veelee (http://www.myspace.com/seeveelee)
NAPS
Kings, Raleigh

If this isn't sold out already, it will be shortly. Future Islands used
to be a nerdy weird brilliant synth-pop band from Greenville called Art
Lord & his Self-Portraits, who typically played to like 40 people. They
jettisoned the elaborate back-story & the funny name, moved to
Baltimore, and now they're a nerdy weird brilliant synth-pop band who
actually seem to be beloved by whole great swaths of Young America.

The new Veelee album, "The Future Sight," is one of the best things I've
heard all year. Don't wait 'til 2011 when it's on everyone's top-10 lists.

Friday, November 19
Twilighter (http://twilighter.net/)
Puritan Rodeo (http://www.thepuritanrodeoshow.blogspot.com/)
New Town Drunks (http://www.newtowndrunks.com/)
The Gasoline Stove (http://www.myspace.com/thegasolinestove)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Friday, November 19
Honored Guests (http://www.thehonoredguests.com/)
Luego (http://luegomusic.com/)
John Howie & the Sweethearts
Motorco Music Hall, Durham

The Honored Guests played my radio show last week & it was a truly
lovely thing - the current lineup (and particularly Elyse's harmony
vocals) really does justice to the sound & feel of the albums.

Friday, November 19
North Elementary (http://www.northelementary.com)
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
Jew(s) & Catholic(s) (http://www.myspace.com/jewsandcatholics)
The Pinhook, Durham

I don't know if this is a formal 307 Knox Records showcase or not, but
all three of these bands have released material on the Durham label
within the past 9 months or so.

Friday, November 19
The Infamous Sugar (http://www.myspace.com/theinfamoussugar)
The Last Tall Boy
The TeeBeeA's
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Saturday, November 20
Erie Choir (http://www.eriechoir.com)
The Strugglers (http://www.thestrugglers.org/)
Wes Phillips (http://www.myspace.com/wesleydongeroga)
Butterflies (http://www.myspace.com/butterfliesnc)
Cassis Orange
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

One of my favorite things about the Trekky bands is that they're nearly
always gung-ho in favor of booking the best bands in town to play with
them, even when it means risking being outshone on the occasion of your
own CD-release party.

So this is a CD-release for Butterflies, but you also get treated to a
couple of all-too-rare appearances, by the notoriously reclusive Erie
Choir and the Randy-moved-to-DC Strugglers, two bands fronted by two of
the best songwriters this area has seen in the past decade.

*And* you get kooky next-big-thing Cassis Orange, as well as Wes
Phillips, formerly of the criminally underappreciated Iowa-to-Raleigh
band Ticonderoga.

Saturday, November 20
Felix Obelix (http://www.myspace.com/felixobelix)
Velvet Umbrella Orchestra and Chorus
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Felix Obelix are the strange and wonderful brainchild of oboist Wendy
Spitzer, who also plays in Billy Sugarfix's Carousel. The full listing
for this show says: Velvet Umbrella Orchestra and Chorus perform
selections from Seamus Kenney's "All Hail The Comet - A Sci-Fi Pop Opera"

Saturday, November 20
Schooner (http://www.schoonermusic.com)
Huguenots (http://www.myspace.com/thehuguenotsmusic)
Wages (http://www.myspace.co/wageswages)
The Pinhook, Durham

Saturday, November 20
The Old Ceremony (http://www.theoldceremony.com/)
The Tomahawks (http://www.myspace.com/jeffcrawfordmusic)
Motorco Music Hall, Durham

The Old Ceremony are one of those bands who make everyone else seem like
amateurs. Wicked wit, impeccable arrangements; they should be playing a
sold-out 1000-seat hall somewhere else tonight.

Saturday, November 20
Fan-Tan (http://www.myspace.com/fantanrock)
I Was Totally Destroying It
(http://www.reverbnation.com/iwastotallydestroyingit)
Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun
(http://www.myspace.com/todaythemoontomorrowthesun)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Saturday, November 20
Bridges and Powerlines (http://www.bridgesandpowerlines.com/)
Western Civ. (http://westerncivrock.com)
Ghost Town Revelry (http://www.ghosttownrevelry.com/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Sunday, November 21
Bustello (http://www.myspace.com/bustellomusic)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

Bustello make a reverb-heavy, rollicking surf-swamp-something form of
indie-rock that puts them into the same loose category as the
Rock*A*Teens. Or, even more aptly, the 90s Chapel Hill band Metal Flake
Mother. No coincidence that MFM singer/guitarist Ben Clarke fronts Bustello.

4:00 p.m. at 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, November 21
Direct Control (http://www.deepfrybonanza.com/directcontrol/)
Double Negative (http://www.myspace.com/thedoublenegative)
Shards (http://www.myspace.com/shardsnc)
Stripmines
Libyans
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

This is an early (7:00pm) show featuring a big chunk of the Sorry State
roster, including Raleigh hardcore superheroes Double Negative. It's
also a record-release for both Shards and Stripmines. (Devour are also
on the bill)

Sunday, November 21
Patty Hurst Shifter (http://www.pattyhurstshifter.com)
Tres Chicas (http://www.treschicas.org/)
Alejandro Escovedo (http://www.alejandroescovedo.com/)
A Mexican Terrarium
Southland Ballroom, Raleigh

This is a benefit for Chip Robinson, Raleigh ex-pat & former frontman of
the phenomenal Backsliders. He was in a pretty bad bike wreck, and this
being America, and him being a musician, he's therefore flat-out fucked,
insurance-wise.

The Southland Ballroom is a brand-spanking-new venue over in the
Glenwood South area.

Sunday, November 21
Kennebec
Scarlet Virginia (http://www.reverbnation.com/scarletvirgini)
Transistor Zen
Louder Moonlight
Of Blood and Whiskey
Kings, Raleigh

This is a benefit for the Raleigh Rescue Mission.

Monday, November 22
Sharon Van Etten (http://www.myspace.com/sharonvanetten)
Junip (http://www.junip.net/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

There were many high points at the Megafaun-led Sounds of the South
event in Durham a couple of months ago, but if one were to ask around, I
suspect a consensus would quickly form that Sharon Van Etten was the
best of a very great bunch.

Monday, November 22
Gentle Robot
Lost Trail
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, November 23
Old Bricks
Kurt Vile and the Violators (http://www.myspace.com/kurtvileofphilly)
Purling Hiss (http://www.myspace.com/purlinghiss)
Kings, Raleigh

Kurt Vile & Purling Hiss came through Chapel Hill on this same tour just
a few weeks ago, and Chaz has been ranting about Purling Hiss ever
since. http://bullcityrecords.com/wnng/2010/11/02/purling-hiss-at-local-506/

Tuesday, November 23
Bermuda Triangles
Tate House
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, November 23
Alex Cuba (http://www.alexcuba.com/)
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

Winner of the 2010 Latin Grammy for Best New Artist, apparently.
