Finding good music in Chapel Hill

I would also like to report my deep shame for not mentioning that IBMA
Emerging Artist of the Year, The Steep Canyon Rangers, were formed in
Chapel Hill. I think 3/4 of the band, or thereabouts, went to school
at Carolina. Mike Guggino is my currently in my top 5 mandolin
players, one of the few young players who sounds like he remembers how
Big Mon used to play it, with a little Ronnie McCoury thrown in,
possibly a little Jesse McReynolds, and his own special sauce.

Speaking of a McCoury, The Del McCoury band will be playing this fall
at Shakori Hills, headlining along with The Carolina Chocolate Drops.
That would be a good place to see musicians with skillz who shred.
Also, don't forget The Hoppin' John Fiddler's Convention in Sept.,
also to be held out at Shakori Hills: band competitions, individual
instrument competitions, lots of shredding skillzaniacs.

This has been a public service announcement. We now return you to your
regularly scheduled rawk.
