Wednesday - 4/25 - Guru's Jazzmatazz - Way back when this project first hit the streets, headphones and decks, the idea of hiphop and jazz existed in fairly separate worlds despite Miles Davis Doo-Bop release as well as various singles and efforts by hiphop and jazz musicians to replicate. But Guru, from hiphop world's legendary Gangstarr, came through hooking up collaborations with the who's whos and successfully initiating what is hiphop and jazz fusion. Today the jazz is much more evident in the groove when it comes to so much we listen to now. Cats Cradle, 309 E. Main St, Carrboro - www.myspace.com/guru7grand & www.catscradle.com

Thursday - 4/26 to Saturday - 4/28 - Signal: Southeast Electronic Music Festival - This is the second time around for the electronic fest based in Chapel Hill and by the looks of it, the party is much more amped and positively brimming with signs of evolution. Local, national and international djs and bands will be sharing the boombeat with listeners and dancers over the next few days while the fest also carries on with industry networking, workshops and of course the unavoidable afterparty. Everything from ambient to live experimental to hiphop to drum and bass to world beats to the various shades of house music will be in the ear. Thursday night starts off with a talk by one of THE innovators, Derrick May, of what really is techno music. (However not what many people consider is techno as a standard knee-jerk response). Let the parties begin! Check www.signalfest.com for information.
