Gun Metal Black
The Lineage
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

This is an after-race rockshow/benefit for the Durham Bike Co-op
(http://www.myspace.com/durhambikecoop ). Last year's big race was an
alleycat-style urban stage race; this year, they're promising "a sort of
deranged omnium," with events to include Tractor Pull, Crooked Crank
Racing, Bike Polo, Hill Sprints, Huffy Toss, Tube Change & others. The
race/event is in the afternoon; registration commences at 1:00 at the
SunTrust building downtown. The rockshow is at 9:00.

longer summery evenings to come.

Weekend) is the new band fronted by Matt Kalb (Audubon Park, ex-Hotel
Motel), along with Bob Wall (ex-HotMot, ex-Razzle) & a couplea
ex-members of the awesome Asheville band Piedmont Charisma.

Thursday, April 26 - Sunday, April 29
Signal Electronic Music Festival (http://www.signalfest.com/)
various locales, Chapel Hill

The Signal Electronic Music Festival has gotten even huge-r this year
than it was last year. It kicks off on Thursday with "Techno: A Black
American Artform," a lecture, Q&A, and series of live performances,
including Detroit techno pioneer Derrick May, at the UNC Student Union.

Things kinda snowball from there; you're better off going straight to
the Signalfest website (http://www.signalfest.com/ ) for the full
rundown, than you would be if I tried to synopsize here.

Suffice it to say that there are a ton of DJs, a half-ton of
electronic-music artists, and even a couple of rockbands (The Nein
appear at the Cradle on Friday, opening for uncleared-sample / noise /
collage godfathers Negativland). At Blend on Saturday, minimalist/sound
installation artist Richard Chartier (http://www.3particles.com/ ) will
be doing, um, something. Something very little, I guess. Pulsoptional
are also on that bill.

Thursday, April 26
Erie Choir (http://www.eriechoir.com)
Noncanon (http://www.myspace.com/noncanon)
Mason Dixon
Tartufi (http://www.tartufirock.net/)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Erie Choir are the sad-eyed George Harrison vs. Elliott Smith rockgroup
of Eric Roehrig, who also sometimes plays & sings in Sorry About
Dresden. I think they've changed their lineup for their spring tour, but
one thing is constant: Eric's brilliant songwriting.

I heard a rumor Noncanon had added a bass player. What = perfect + 1?

The Green Fields (http://myspace.com/thegreenfields)

Hentai Lacerator (http://www.myspace.com/hentailacerator)
Yoe (http://www.myspace.com/yoeband)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Friday, April 27
Straight 8s (http://www.straight8s.com)
The Belmont Playboys (http://www.thebelmontplayboys.com/)
Hideaway BBQ, Raleigh

Belmont Playboys are from Charlotte, and have been doing the
rockabilly-revivalist thing since 1989 or so, with a few years off here
& there for good behavior.

Friday, April 27
Dry Heathens (http://www.myspace.com/dryheathens)
Dan Melchior (http://danmelchior.com/)
Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies
(http://www.myspace.com/violetvectorandthelovelylovelies)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

The Bull City HQ website says "Garage Night in Durham," and mebbe that's
an apt description. Back in the '90s sometime, Durham's (well, at the
time England's) Dan Melchior went fairly abruptly from playing in an
obscure garage band, to a multi-year stint playing & recording with
Holly Golightly. He moved to the USA in 2000. Not sure when he wound up
in Durham, but he released a crazed little acid-damaged DIY bedroom
blooz-folk-rock 7" a couple of months ago, and he has a band, Das
Menace, with Kuki & some other folks.

Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies are total girl-group exhilaration.
I'd give them 1800 stars (out of a possible 5), only all their songs are
about twice as long as they ought to be. Gotta dock them 1796 stars for
that.

Dry Heathens had a pleasantly bitter little ditty, "Sociopath," on the
307 Knox compilation last year. They're an indie-rock band, in the
classical sense of the term.

Friday, April 27
The Port Huron Statement (http://www.porthuronstatement.com/)
North Elementary (http://www.northelementary.com)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Friday, April 27
Snatches of Pink (http://www.snatchesofpink.com/)
Dexter Romweber (http://www.dexterromweber.com)
Reservoir, Carrboro

It's a CD-release show for Snatches of Pink, to celebrate the release of
"Love is Dead." Snatches have left Charlotte's MoRisen Records, and have
finally/once again struck out on their own: the CD is being released by
8th House Records, a new label founded by Snatches frontman Michael Rank
and drummer (and $2 Pistols frontman) John Howie Jr.

Opening the show: the Dexter Romweber Duo, which hopefully still
includes Dex's sister (and former Snatches drummer) Sara Romweber.
