I've heard some good things about the new Zoom H4 recorder. Here's a
post I saw on LiveJournal comparing the H4 to Edirol R-09:
> i've used both the R9 and the H4, and i'm more partial to the H4.
> the R9 is a really good unit, don't get me wrong. but there's a couple things that steer me > to the H4. one, the H4's XLR inputs with phantom power and a good preamp stage are a > major plus compared to the R9. i've used neumann km184s and DPA 4022s with the H4, > and they worked beautifully, although if you're recording high-spl stuff you need an > external preamp or the internal preamp will overload.
> also, the mini jack on the R9 is prone to breaking and needing a soldering job to work > again.
> the R9 is smaller than the H4, so if that's an issue, you might want to go towards the R9, > but the quality difference will, in my opinion, make the H4 size worth it.
Hope this helps,
