It's tough competition tonight, but Stockholm's standard-bearers for
twee indie pop Acid House Kings and The Legends are playing at the
Raleigh (formerly Martin Street) Music Hall. Apparently they missed
ALL the listings, but I figured some of you would be interested.
AHK are one of Sweden's most popular guitar pop bands, with radio
hits to prove it. Pitchfork compared them to Scots like Belle &
Sebastian and Camera Obscura, but they have a wide scope of
influences that show up (and give ,
The Legends are a sweet, energetic, clap-happy sing-along band that
shares members with AHK and reminds me of C-86 faves like the Pastels
(albeit with the 9+ piece stage presence of Broken Social Scene...)
AHK songwriter/guitarist Johan Angergard is not only in both bands,
but he also runs influential Swedish Pop label Labrador (also home of
Sambassadeur and Radio Dept.)
Down By Avalon are local popsters who have suffered through
comparisons to R.E.M., XTC and Love, and are finishing up their first
record.
Doors are at 9, Down By Avalon are at 10pm, The Legends at 11 and
Acid House Kings after them.
