Internationalist Books will be tabling at the first ever Ladyfest NC
happening the weekend of October 21-23. Ladyfest is a festival
organized by local women of all identities to showcase, celebrate and
encourage the art and activism of women everywhere. It is a music and
arts festival benefiting local organizations that support women and is

*THIS* SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22 - DESERT CITY POETRY SERIES:
JOHN TAGGART & RANDALL WILLIAMS, 8pm
On October 22th the Desert City Poetry Series presents the second of two
October readings at Ibooks. This Saturday will feature John Taggart,
author of "Pastorelles", "Loop", "When the Saints", "Standing Wave", and
many others; two time NEA literature fellow; & scholar of the
paintings of Edward Hopper. We will also welcome Randall Williams,
poet, anti-war activist, freelance journalist; author of
"40 Days"; & dwells in a cabin in Hillsborough.
Ken Rumble would like me to include that Mr. Taggart can dance a jig on
the point of a pin and Mr. Williams ate five cans of Spam one night
and woke up in possession of a silver '74 Corvette. Questions about
these anecdotes and anything regarding Desert City can be directed to

*NEXT* WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26 - REPORT BACK FROM VENEZUELA, 7pm
What is happening in Venezuela? Come hear an eyewitness report from
three Triangle activists who visited Venezuela this summer and attended
the World Youth Festival there. While in Venezuela, they spoke to a
variety of people about the Bolivarian Revolution led by Hugo Chavez's
government, the changes underway as a result, and attempts by the US to
disrupt the revolution. On October 26, at 7pm, they will share what
they heard.

Wave: Feminist Generations/Generating Feminisms" @ UNC-CH
The Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture is hosting a
symposium on the power and relevance of primary source materials to
the history and future of feminism on October 26-27. All events are
free and open to the public. Featured speakers include Feminist
Majority Foundation president Eleanor Smeal, artist Judy Chicago,
artist/writer Sarah Dyer, and many local women activists including

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17 - “LOST VOICES OF THE AFRO-CELTS" @ THE TOY
LOUNGE, DEY HALL, UNC-CH, 3:30pm
“Lost Voices of the Afro-Celts”, in the Centering the American South
lecture series of the Center for the Study of the American South at the
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. This lecture will explore
some of the forgotten connections between African-Americans and Scottish
Highlanders and remind us of the rich cultural interactions between
people of all ethnic origins in our complex nation. Lecturer Dr Michael
Newton has a PhD in Celtic Studies from the University of Edinburgh. He
has written several books and numerous articles on Highland history and
tradition, and has become the leading scholar on the culture and history
of immigrant Highland communities in the United States. He is a fluent
Gaelic speaker, a proponent of Highland song and dance, and a published
creative writer in the Gaelic language.
