Culture Crawl is a Downtown Durham monthly art, theatrical, and social event - promoted and organized by volunteers. Artists of various types of mediums will showcase their works at downtown galleries, theatrical spaces, restaurants and nightclubs. All events are open to the public.
Carolina Theatre: Kick off your "Culture Crawl" weekend at the Carolina Theatre with the Retrofantasma Film Series and the Annual Escapism Action, Adventure & Animation Film Festival. Mention that you are a Culture Crawler on Friday night, October 21 and get a free bag of popcorn with the purchase of any movie ticket!
Here's the skinny - How about a double dose of horror at Friday's Retrofantasma Film Series? It's a Roger Corman double feature with Mindwarp: Galaxy of Terror at 7:30 pm followed by Humanoids From the Deep at 9:30 pm. Tickets are available at the astoundingly low price of $6.50 for both films. Sign up for cool door prizes and get ready for classic horror trailers and a lot of fun.
If retro horror doesn't strike a chord, Friday night is also the opening of the 3rd Annual Escapism Action, Adventure & Animation Film Festival. Escapism will run from Friday, October 21 through Sunday, October 23 and features an adrenalin-fueled weekend of excitement with a dozen films guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. Look for Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Pulse, Star Wars: Revelations, and the 2005 installment of The Animation Show. Tickets are only $7.50 The Carolina Theatre is located at 309 W. Joe & Jo's Downtown Restaurant and Pub: Art Reception with Megan Koslofsky & Live Music with the Ladyfest Music Festival. Artist Bio: Megan grew up in Durham and discovered the love of art without any formal training as a kid, creating collages and sculptures "from the things around me." She attended the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design and learned about materials, mediums and techniques, "adding more tools to my bag of tricks." It was there that Megan discovered printmaking. "My printmaking teachers were good for me and taught me as much as they could about the different types of printmaking and techniques, allowing me to exploit the potentialities of the medium. I graduated and moved back to Durham the same day. I am enjoying being back in down South."
Lady Fest Music Festival: Live music at Joe & Jo's all night! Ladyfest is a festival organized by local women of all identities to showcase, celebrate and encourage the art and activism of women everywhere. Ladyfest NC is a music and arts festival benefiting local organizations that support women. Through This Lens: It is Black and White season at Through This Lens gallery with three groups of photographs on display beginning October 21 at 6:00 PM: Vintage photographs from the American Cinema; historic images from Durham and other North Carolina locations by journalist and photographer Billy E. Barnes; and a special selection of images from the New York Times Photo Archives. A little bit of history for everyone! Immediately after Culture Crawl, look for lots of changes at Through This Lens. Flywheel Design Gallery: Presents - blackBox, whiteSquare - Works by Cici Stevens. Brief description of Steven's work: "Pairing odd objects collected along roadways and mounted on a matte black steel box, Cici aims to heighten the relationship between human ingenuity and the inescapable forces of nature." Reception is Friday, Oct 21, 5 to 8 pm, as part of Durham's Culture Crawl. Flywheel is open weekdays from 9:30am to 5pm. Designathon, a design marathon to
benefit local nonprofits, will run concurrently

Alliance Architecture: Wine and Cheese reception and fundraiser to benefit victims of the Kashmir earthquake. Pashmina shawls, wool throw rugs, and cotton table linens from India and Pakistan and silk floral arrangements from an Indian designer will be for sale, with all proceeds going to the relief effort. Please stop by to shop, browse, or just to socialize. The reception will be held in the lobby of the Eleanor, at 208 Rigsbee Avenue, next to our office. For more information, call 682-6393.

The Scrap Exchange Gallery: Presents our 2nd Annual Artists Marketplace, October 21st-January 10th: Featuring products made from reusable materials by local artists. Durham Arts Council: The Durham Arts Council will continue their exhibits in the Allenton and Semans Galleries - "American Journal: a collection of off beat small town road trips" is Mary Haggerty's black and white narrative photographs documenting small town America. Her art will be on display in the Allenton Gallery on the Main Level, while "Moments Like This"- Lisa Cook's classically realistic oil paintings will be on display in the Semans Gallery on the Upper Level of the Durham Arts Council building. Both exhibits will be on display from August 20 - October 23, 2005 with a special ArtsAlive! Reception held Thursday, September 15th from 5-7 p.m. ArtsAlive! Receptions are free and open to the public. Also, the Durham Art Guild will present the following artists for their season opener: Elizabeth Aralia (fiber), Murry Handler (painting), Louanne Watley (photography), the Governor Morehead School (group show), and Back Porch Photo Gallery Theme Show (People with Cake). This show runs through October 16. The galleries of the Durham Arts Council are open 9 am - 9 pm, Monday - Saturday, and 1 - 6 pm Sunday. The DAC is located at 120 Morris Street, 546-0074.
Peacefire Gallery: In addition to running their gallery, Inga and Sima have formed a non profit (501c3) called PRE (peacefire relief effort). This organization provides ongoing direct relief to families and individuals that are victims of natural disasters(including poverty). Please continue donating food, school supplies, clothing, relocation assistance etc. If you are interested in becoming a part of this effort via volunteering, goods or monetary donation (for shipping), please contact Peacefire at 682-5808, 105 East Chapel Hill Street.
