Yes I was concentrating on software that you are using locally. You
are absolutely right about hardware as far as I understand it.

GNU requires copyright assignment for code contributed to projects.
This is so that there is a single copyright holder for each project,
which is important when taking action against license violators. It is
not so that the projects can be modified for private clients for
money.
