I've never used any of these, but manybooks.net has a CC book portal with
225 titles: http://manybooks.net/categories/CCL with a section dedicated to
book reviews and recommendations:
http://manybooks.net/eBook_recommendations.php
http://dublit.com/ might be good for promoting books, especially if you're
friend ties in a podcast series or "audioshort". From a first impression,
the audio trailers on dublit seem like a neat way to introduce people to
your work: http://dublit.com/shelfpage plus CC licensing is enabled: #7

Lastly, for scientific works, http://www.intratext.com/ says it offers a
catalog of "12,000,000 pages in 40 languages", most of which is CC-licensed.
...
Hope those links help! I pulled them all from "Text" on
http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Content_Directories where there's about 70
more entries. I haven't had the chance to try out any others, but perhaps
someone else on the list has a tip or two! (^_^)
All the best,
Michelle
