just to add.. i was the only performer at the performance space on the night
that AKM are asking a fee from the space. all the songs that i perform are
songs i wrote.
also: mostly the spaces i perform songs at, pay a fee to a rights
organization. What i like about the live license is that i can get my guitar
out and play some songs in a hostel space for example. If the rights
organizations were to ask the hostel about a show being played on a
particular night, the hostel is able to produce the license.
I did not expect the rights organizations to go against the live license, as
i have always only performed songs i write. If i was singing other peoples
songs and saying that i played my own songs. I would understand the rights
organizations concern. The live license, could be a valid license for all
artists that make their own songs. At the moment artists are often
encouraged to perform songs that are owned by publishers, as the space pays
the same fee for well published content as they do for self published
content. A live license could really help artists and eventually publishers
in Europe.
