I got this note from Jonathan Gray of the The Open Knowledge
Foundation<http://www.okfn.org/>
:
I wondered whether you might consider displaying one of our Open Knowledge
buttons on Appropedia:
http://opendefinition.org/buttons/
They basically act as a green light to share, build upon, and integrate with
other resources. They demonstrate compliance with the Open Knowledge
Definition (OKD) which I think we spoke about. Current users include: AMEE,
MusicBrainz, omdb, Prelinger Archives at archive.org, ...
I think Appropedia are very much in line with this, and there haven't been
any objections, but I'm wondering what the difference is between displaying
the Open Definition button, and the Free Cultural Works Logos and
buttons<http://freedomdefined.org/Logos_and_buttons>.
Is it just that the Open Knowledge Definition is about knowledge,
whereas Free Cultural Works also includes artistic works like images and
music? If so, it seems more about terminology, as I don't see how the
knowledge/art distinction is relevant to licensing.
Should we display both? Seems cluttered.
My concern is that if I don't have time to figure this stuff out, and I'm
working on open content, how can I expect the average user of the site to
understand what these things mean? Sure, the general idea is clear, but the
separate terms and marks are not.
I want to discuss this at the OSNCamp* this weekend, while introducing the
idea of open licensing and open license marks to those who want to learn
about them.
*OSNCamp is the first gathering of the *Open Sustainability
Network*<http://opensustainabilitynetwork.org/>,
this weekend in San Francisco. All welcome.
