The band/artist is putting a creative commons license on the song and  
recording. The people that wrote the song and recorded the song best  
agree that the license go on the tune.

the creative commons license looks at the song and recording as being  
the same or one, i think? Different creative commons licenses allow  
different permissions.

A song that is released under a creative commons license that allows  
commercial use (provided you attribute the writer of the song when  
you sing that song), could be performed by your band anywhere, yet  
the issue of attribution might be complex. If the band is going to  
spend time with a song, it might be worth contacting the band or  
artist to find out if permissions might be relaxed.
