Interesting predicament. First, I'm not a lawyer so this shouldn't be
taken as legal advice.
But my feeling is that you're free to distribute your music under Creative
Commons' Attribution-NonCommercial license at least, which restricts
commercial use. My rudimentary understanding is that ASCAP retains
commercial rights to the performance of your music and that is it, so the
only conflict you'd run into in releasing your work for free would be if you
wanted a more liberal license, like Attribution or Attribution-ShareAlike.
