Last I heard, using parens-around-a-c
as in (c) as a replacement for a
c-in-a-circle symbol, is not legally recognized.
You can either use the c-in-a-circle symbol,
or you can use the full word "Copyright",
to gain the legal advantage of a copyright notice
(of being able to sue infringers for more damages).
I had read somewhere a while ago that "(c)" didn't qualify.
This was from a few years ago, though.
Maybe that's changed.
Also, the copyright notice as a whole has a particular format:
(1) (2) (3)
where:
(1) The word "Copyright" or the c-in-a-circle symbol
(2) The year of publication (and subsequent publications, and other
weirdnesses)
(3) The name of the author, or rights holder in the case of a work for hire
therefore, my copyright notice must look like this:
Copyright 2008 Greg London
The main thing is simply to get that a copyright notice
is not an idealogical clash with a CC license. Copyright
law isn't an idealogical clash with a CC license. CC licenses
operate inside of copyright law and use it to their advantage.
If it's a matter of a visual clash of (c) versus (cc), then
the person should probably consider replacing (c) with the
word "Copyright" anyway, so that they are implementing the
legally recognized form of a copyright notice.
