Yes, saw that, and was about to post to the list. Though it looks like great news, I was confused about something: they say that the first 9 tracks are available for free and in a DRM-free format. Yet they also state that ALL 36 tracks are licensed under CC BY-NC-SA:
"Ghosts I-IV is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license <http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/us/> . "
So, it looks like all tracks are licensed under a CC license which allows for free non-commercial copying, but from their site you can only get a copy of the first 9 tracks for free. For the rest, you need to pay, even if your use is going to be non-commercial. I thought about this a bit, and my first reaction was to question whether Trent Reznor understands the implications of the license, but I find that, after all, this is going to be an interesting experiment in combining commercial distribution with CC licensing. It's also different from Radiohead's In Raindows, as Trent Reznor does not give you an option to download the entire album for free from the official site, he is just giving you the option to post all of the tracks online after you purchase them, for others to download for free. It would be interesting to compare the primary (commercial) versus the secondary (non-commercial) market. And of course, I can already see some remix competitions coming up!
By the way, the Ghosts site is mostly down and out. Same story with the In Rainbows album, I couldn't access it for a while, and now they don't provide the downloads any more. Are these examples of well-known musicians experimenting with new distribution models but then actually not having the means, or not wanting to make it easy for consumers to download their music for free? Let's face it, centralized distribution costs money, and this money needs to come from somewhere. Both Radiohead and NIN seem to still rely a lot on selling recorded music. Concerts, licensing fees and merchandise probably isn't enough.
Also, has anyone listened to this album? I hope it is not again a bunch of recycled and tired ideas, like most of what has come out lately under the NIN label (I hope nobody flames me for saying that :)

Subject: [cc-community] Trentz Reznor / Nine Inch Nails releases 36 tracksalbum using CC
Hi everbody,
I just heard that one of my favorite bands Nine Inch Nails has released
a 36 tracks / 4-cd album 'Ghost 1-IV' under a CC BY-NC-SA license[1]. It
has been released in four different packages:
1) $5 digital download: All 36 tracks in a variety of digital formats
including a 40 page PDF
2) $10 2xCD set
Ghosts I-IV on two audio CDs in a six panel digipak package with a 16
page booklet.
3) $75 Deluxe Edition
Ghosts I-IV in a hardcover fabric slipcase containing: 2 audio CDs, 1
data DVD with all 36 tracks in multi-track format, and a Blu-ray disc
with Ghosts I-IV in high-definition 96/24 stereo and accompanying slideshow
4) $300 Ultra Deluxe
Includes everything in the Deluxe Edition Package, along with an
exclusive four-LP 180 gram vinyl set in a fabric slipcase, and two
exclusive limited edition Giclee prints in a luxurious package. Limited
to 2500 pieces, numbered and signed by Trent Reznor.
Besides these packages you can download Ghost-I for free:
"The first 9 tracks from the Ghosts I-IV collection available as
high-quality, DRM-free MP3s, including the complete PDF."
I'm very curious about his experiences with using CC and would like to
suggest to invite Trent Reznor for the icommons conference in Japan.
Exciting to see well-established artists such as Nine Inch Nails
experimenting with CC and different sales models for music.
