I chose CC-NC-ND for my flickr photos. I chose NC because I do not want
some one leeching off them either via Google Adsense or by any other
means. I chose to add ND in case by some deviousness the NC clause is
render inoperative by some minor derivation.
There are a number of web sites that are non-commercial that could use
my images, and a large number of blogs as well. Schools and Universities
have used them as teaching material and as part of their websites,
perhaps in some case they would have had a fair-use claim, but the CC
license removes a degree of worry from them.
That flickr contains ads is not an issue here because as the content
provider I chose to put the images on flickr being fully aware of the
terms and conditions of using flickr. I may also chose to put them on
other sites that contain ads, that is my prerogative as the content
For bloggers, having Adsense on a blog is not necessary, and I see many
blogspot and wordpress pages without any Adsense ads at all. The blogger
it seems choses to incorporate Adsense, which is fine, just so long as
they don't also add my images.
If YOU have a blog that displays ads that are outside of your control
then I don't think that YOUR use is commercial. For example if you put
one of my images on a MySpace page, even though it is plastered with
News Corps adverts, then I wouldn't consider it commercial as the person
using the image is not deriving revenue from the ads.
Do not put my NC images on wikimedia because all their content has to be
available for commercial purposes. I DO NOT want my content exploited
commercially, which is why I've added a NC license.
