One way that anyone who posts content on the Web (CC-licensed or
otherwise) can earn money is by publishing advertising, for example
Google AdSense (https://www.google.com/adsense/).
I have a single page with the attribution-noderivs license that, at its
peak, earned USD $5000 per month, and still earns significant money. It
has been republished to several other sites, but my original copy still
ranks ahead of all the other copies in the search results.
I'm working on a whole new website whose eventual ad revenue should pay
my way through music school. (I aim to change careers from software
engineering to musical composition.)
This is why musicians shouldn't depend solely on music hosting sites
like MySpace to distribute their music; MySpace would earn all the ad
revenue, and not the content creator.
