Though true, this states the status quo, not an argument for maintaining
it -- a society that rewards creativity better would presumeably be more
productive.

But not the last two! :-) JKR is a success story of the old copyright
system.

That, however, is not -- and is probably more typical.
But just because our present (and past) system sucks, doesn't mean we
can't create a worse one.
And if we go off half-cocked, talking about "encouraging altruism"
instead of thinking realistically about how to make such a system work,
then we're even likely to. "Failing to plan is planning to fail" and all
that.
