Is it really? Do we *actually* want people to starve themselves in order
to provide us with art we can use freely? (Also noting that this is
ultimately self-defeating, since, once starved and dead, they are unable
to continue producing, quite apart from the obvious humanitarian concerns).

I think not.

I think an economically rational balance is the most "ethical" situation
you can hope for.

In concept, that's what the copyright system is supposed to be. The
rationale behind free culture is largely based in the premise that that
system is now extremely sub-optimal, both due to extension by
self-interested middlemen and due to fundamental changes in technology
and distribution.

But there's nothing more ethical about a system that starves producers
than one that starves consumers. Indeed, in an ideal free culture, the
difference between the two groups should fade away or at least become
highly blurred, so that their economic interests are shared.
