Greetings all,

I've been lurking for a while on this list, reading the discussions with great interest. I'm the co-author (with Scott Dexter) of a recently
released book on free software (titled Decoding Liberation: The Promise of Free and Open Source Software - you can check out the info page at http://www.sci.brooklyn.cuny.edu/~bcfoss/DL). The book was published by Routledge (this past August) in their New Media and Cyberculture Series. We tried to get more liberal licensing terms for the book (some sort of Creative Commons License) but failed. The book is out, its expensive, and on its release, an interesting discussion about our decision to release it under a traditional copyright license (especially given the subject matter of the book) took place on a few blogs. Rather than try and recapitulate that discussion here, I'd like to point you to the page linked above where you will find links to the blogs where this discussion took place. I'd be very interested in your feedback (and if anyone is interested in a copy of the book, please write to me - I can mail you a PDF). We feel the issues raised in those discussions should be of interest to anyone publishing in the academic world. I also entered into a longish conversation with Gavin Baker on this topic, and if he agrees, I can post excerpts from our email conversation on this list as well.

best,
Samir Chopra
