Oops. Sorry, I wasn't responding to the "in the absence of copyleft
licensing" part, obviously.
Yes, it would be fair to say that, absent copyleft licensing, no
copyright would be better for some of these works than the present
copyright system.
But no copyright is probably not better than any conceiveable copyright
system -- one can imagine a more limited copyright that is better than
either the present system or no copyright, even without copyleft licensing.
But of course, WITH copyleft licensing, such a system would be even better.
