[cc-community] Bad performance rights bill

The following was just forwarded to the MusicThoughts mailing list,
which is operated by CD Baby for music industry professionals.

My understanding is that this bill would raise performance royalties for
traditional radio broadcasters to be the same as for Internet radio. If
it passes, it would make it really hard to argue that Internet radio
royalties ought to be reduced.

I think this would be a bad law if passed, and ask cc-community list
members who are US citizens to contact their congressional
representatives to protest it.

I haven't read the actual bill yet, but after I do I expect I could
write an article for the Kuro5hin community website - I'm a prominent
member there.

"The Performance Rights Act."

Dear Recording Academy Member:

In June, I wrote to inform you about the musicFIRST (Fairness in Radio
Starting Today) campaign to remove the historic injustice exempting
radio broadcasters from paying royalties for sound recordings.

In July at the request of The Recording Academy, your fellow Academy
members Judy Collins and Sam Moore testified before the U.S. House of
Representatives to advocate for a fair performance right.

In November, Recording Academy Chicago Chapter President Alice Peacock
and Academy member Lyle Lovett testified before the U.S. Senate on this
issue.

Yesterday, a bi-partisan coalition of Congressional leaders in the House
and Senate introduced "The Performance Rights Act."

Today, it's your turn.

Please let your elected officials in Washington know that fairness for
music creators is important to you.? It only takes a few minutes to send
an email to the House and Senate by using this link
http://capwiz.com/grammy/issues/alert/?alertid=10695346&type=COF

Together, we can achieve Fairness in Radio Starting Today.

Kind Regards,
Neil Portnow
President/CEO
The Recording Academy

PS, please forward this email to your friends and colleagues in the
music community.
