A lot of thought seems to have gone into electronic means of encoding
rights under Creative Commons licences, but I can't find any guidance
on hanwriting labels on CDs and DVDs.
This is a quite likely medium for non-commercial distribution in
electronic form, but has severe space limitations, especially when
handwritten. What, I think is needed, is very terse formulations that
communicate as much as possible of the rights and responsibilities.
The actual issue that triggered it was that I was given a DVD of some
speech MP3s (Chinese POD) under the CC Attribution 2.5 Licence but with
just the web site name written on the back. I may want to lend them on
to other people to copy and I want it to be clear from the outside of
the media what the licensing status is (many would copy it regardless!)
The DVD already has the site name on.
My guess is that I can get the copyright notice on the rest of the
top half, and I'm hoping that I can write something like:
"Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 Licence: May be performed, copied,
or modified, if originator is credited" on the other half, but it
will be a tight fit.
I don't want to abbreviate "Creative Commons" as I doubt that many
of those involved have heard of you.
There is no machine readable licence document on the disk and I
can't remaster it with one as I don't personally have a DVD writer,
but, in any case, the average person is much more likely to see
notices on the surface of the disk than look for licensing files.
