Wikipedia has one sentence at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Useful_arts
that as far as I know is accurate:
"Useful Arts are concerned with the skills and methods of practical
subjects such as manufacture and craftsmanship. It has now gone out of
fashion, but was coined in Victorian times as a mirror of the performing
arts and the fine arts."
In the US copyright originally only applied to books, maps, and charts.
See http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA158872.html and many other
places.
