That's not entirely true as the authors still have the ability to
not distribute a work and to demand payment before doing so. This is
the "ransom" model.

I think what you mean to say is that, without IP law, there no way for
the producers of intellectual goods to distribute their work and block
uncompensated redistribution, modification, or use.

It may seem nitpicky but it's an important distinction that is at the
crux of several non-IP-based compensation schemes for knowledge
workers.
