Reposting to biblical-languages at lists.ibiblio.org as
biblical-languages at franklin.oit.unc.edu is apparently no longer valid...
I am bringing up here an issue which has recently been on another list.
Users of biblical languages might be interested in OpenOffice.org 1.1 beta
2, a free (but 60 MB) download from www.openoffice.org. This supports
Unicode Greek, Hebrew and many other languages, with a fully featured word
processor, spreadsheet etc. It is available for Windows, Linux and Solaris;
sadly not yet for Mac OS X, for which the current beta is not multilingual.
I would recommend OOo with the caveat that it is beta software which may
have some bugs.
OOo has a bibliography feature which looks very useful for scholars. But I
have discovered a bug in it (on Windows 2000), that the title field, at
least, in the bibliography database does not support multiple encodings e.g.
mixing Greek or Hebrew (or Turkish) with English. In fact it appears to
support only "western" languages on a system set up with the "western" code
page 1252 as its default. I have reported this as a bug. It would be good if
anyone else could give feedback on this issue, especially if it might lead
to the bug being fixed quicker.
