I don't think any of us were much more than lukewarm; it's hard to feel
enthusiastic about a kludge, and I think we all felt that the only solution
that wouldn't be a kludge was to fix the canonical combining classes -- the
very thing that seemed impossible. At the time, we were working on the
understanding that that proposal was the only one that had a chance of
being received. When there's only one open door to where you want to go,
you walk through it wholeheartedly, whether that doorway appeals to you or
not.

I likewise would like to see if this can succeed.
