I've wondered about it too.

I would expect that to be the major legitimzing issue. I can't speak for
what is presently in journals, but from a theoretical standpoint, one should
consider the ease with with a scholar might write on the development, for
example, of those writing systems and wish to integrate various ones in one
monograph.

(Presumably, this could still be done with font-switching, if all are
unified, though *perhaps* a question of sort-order arises? I realize that
sort-indices can be defined secondarily, but how that would work in actual
practice I don't know. I'll be happy to follow this thread and see what
comes up.)
