Thanks to those who have responded to my query about the preferable
Windows version for current use.

and the other more thoroughly later -- it's late now). From what I
understand from a quick look, I don't think that this multilingual support
is anything that would be of particular value to the average user. It
seems designed for an environment in which they use multiple languages and
need to have MENUs and such in other languages. This is not the
multilingual support most of us need. XP home supports unicode which is
the important matter -- unless you are interested in changing your menus
from English to German to French to Spanish to Czech.
I also looked at the article, and admit that with my limited understanding
of this aspect of the technicalities, I couldn't see why the XP
Professional edition might be superior to the Home. I mentioned in my
initial question that I program in Visual Basic, but I haven't the
ambition to be writing menus for other languages, etc. The program that I
wrote for my own use utilized as the basis for its indexing routines the
BWGRKN font which, because it is a proprietary font, means I can't share
what I've done with others. Do the Unicode fonts that come with current
Windows flavours now provide a full set of the Greek characters, or are
these still available only through commercially available fonts?

are dealing with standard Greek texts (including NT). There are some
issues that affect epigraphy, non-Attic dialects, etc., that still are
not adequately addressed but you won't get into these.
What of the uncertainty dot under doubtful letters used in the
transcription of papyrus texts, or the lunate sigma - are these supported?
