The speed issue very much depends on the hardware.  If you're getting a
new machine I don't think you'll notice any slowness with XP.  I have XP
on a year-old machine (procesor running at 1.4 gig) and it's plenty
fast.  BUT - do get lots of memory for XP, at least 256 megabytes.  That
does make a difference.
