You can boot with a DOS boot disk with no autoexec.bat or config.sys.

I have about a dozen of these - 3c509.o
There is a DOS utility from 3com that you can use to reset the numbers
permanently.
3c59x is for a newer PCI card.
One way is to cd to wherever you put the module, then type
insmod ./3c509.o io=0x300 irq=10
If you copy the module to /lib/modules/2.2.26/misc you can just
insmod 3c509 io=0x300 irq=10

That is correct for the pci card but not the ISA one, which needs
parameters specified. Some ISA cards need helper modules but this one
does not.
