They don't print web pages or formatted text as root.
This is what people want to do on the computers we give them, therefore we
are forced to put on Windows just to print with.

We are setting up early Pentiums for people who cannot afford new
computers. I have been making dual-boot computers, linux and Win98, so
they can print with Win98. People need to produce formatted text for
school papers. I can give them HP 500s and a matching printcap if I get
user to work with everything. The few people who I did the dual-boot
models for preferred linux for the internet.

I will figure out the permissions eventually. Someone suggested chmod 666
instead of 777 since ttyS1 need not be executable.

I hope other list members will correct it.

Not me. I work as root and do not print formatted text.

I think I have this under control (despite the fact that ttyS1 got made
executable rather than just rw) but other newbies might give up after
installing passwd.tgz and finding that nothing works as user. I put the
problem aside for a year.

Do other list members want a script that will let BL3 use Opera and
Abiword as 'user'?

Should I just do 'chmod +s' on anything executable (pppd, eznet, rxvt,
Xvesa, Opera, Abiword, gs...) and 'chmod 666' on the com ports and
eznet.conf and printcap?
