It sounds like you need to assign an IP to XP (since automatic won't
work as it doesn't sound like there's a dhcp server). Use 192.168.1.1
(netmask 255.255.255.0) for XP and 192.168.1.2 (netmask 255.255.255.0)
for linux.
Once you do that and share the folder on XP I'm sure smbclient will work
fine for you.
