I really think it's a gdm problem as I can't even login with a ubuntu
dapper live cd from another computer. The xdmcp service is shown but it
doesn't really connect. So I guess I'll have to find some gdm people.

Your alternative solution looks pretty easy but I'd still prefer using
gdm. :)
